Getting your ears pierced; what is the best age?

As a jeweler, we get a lot of customers and children who come to have their ears pierced. It seems to be a given that a girl or woman wants to wear earrings at some point. What is a good age to have your ears pierced? And what to do if a child won't sit still or gets upset? We have listed the different age categories including tips!

Children from 5 to approximately 10 years old
For toddlers and children, piercing often goes most smoothly when they really want it themselves. Our experience is that if a child wants to have their ears pierced, they will sit still. We always recommend that you discuss with the child whether they really want it themselves, then the process will go most smoothly. We always have two employees piercing toddlers and children at the same time.

Teenagers and adults
Up to 16 years we need permission from the parents, this can also be given by telephone. We leave the choice to the child or the customer themselves whether they want us to shoot with two employees at the same time, or whether it can also be done alternately by one employee.

Having multiple holes pierced
We only pierce the earlobe and not the cartilage. Cartilage can be pierced better by a piercing shop. A first and second ear hole can often be pierced through the earlobe without any problems. The cartilage often starts with the third hole. If you come to us for a third hole, we will first feel if there is cartilage. If in doubt, we will not pierce a third hole and we advise you to go to a piercing shop. We also pierce one pair of holes at a time. So we do not pierce the first and then the second one right next to it. We advise you to let the first hole heal properly first and then come back for the second.
