The History of Watches
Watches originated in the 15th century. Explorers needed to track time accurately in order to navigate at sea. While latitude could be calculated by the stars, determining longitude required a timepiece. If the clock was off by just one minute, the navigational error could be as much as 28 kilometers. Thus, watches were born from the need for precise navigation. Instruments like the quadrant, a disc marked with degree arcs, were used to tell time.
The earliest mechanical clocks used a pendulum. In the early 16th century, Peter Henlein created the first portable clock powered by a spring mechanism. This design was further improved by Jacob Zech and Gruet, who invented the fusee—a device that helped regulate spring tension. Not long after, the use of gear wheels was introduced. By 1762, the watch had been refined to a level of accuracy suitable for navigation.
The Wristwatch as We Know It
The wristwatch was invented in the late 19th century and was originally worn as a women's accessory. It wasn't until World War I that watches gained a functional purpose, as soldiers began wearing them on the wrist for quicker timekeeping.
